More weapons caches turning up in Iraq

By KIM GAMEL Associated Press Weapons caches are turning up with increasing frequency in public places in Iraq - from a bakery to a fish farm - as recent security gains embolden more civilians to come forward with tips, U.S. and Iraqi military officials say. The odd locations of many of the discoveries reflect the fine line separating civilians from the Shiite and Sunni extremists who don't wear uniforms and often live among them. Many would-be tipsters had previously looked the other way because of intimidation or because they sought protection from local militias. "These are people who in the past weren't willing to come forth because of the threats from militias," said Maj. Gen. Jeff Hammond, the top commander of U.S. forces in Baghdad. "Now they're telling the Iraqi army they've had it with the militia. 'Don't leave. We want you to stay here.'" The chief Iraqi military commander in Baghdad, Gen. Abboud Qanbar, said the quality of the tips also has improved. "Now we are given accurate information and this has enabled us to discover large caches," he told reporters Wednesday. "Now the citizens are cooperating with us. Thus our work is getting better." Cash rewards are another motivation for tipsters. For the military, it's money well spent: So far this year, U.S. and Iraqi forces have cleared and found 4,950 caches, compared with 6,963 in all of 2007, according to U.S. military figures. Skeptics, however, warn the weapons found to date are likely a small portion of the overall arsenal. They point out that insurgents on both sides of the sectarian divide have proven adept at getting new arms. "It seems to me that the amount that has been confiscated is small relative to the amount that might be out there," says John Pike, a military and security analyst who runs the respected Web site GlobalSecurity.org. "It is an essential part of a counterinsurgency strategy," he said in a telephone interview. "But I just don't see that it has the potential to materially contribute to victory ... because it's just so easy to resupply." But U.S. military officials point to growing public confidence in recent military successes in Shiite militia strongholds. A U.S.-funded Sunni revolt against al-Qaida in Iraq, in which former fighters joined forces with the Americans, also has provided troops with more information about hiding places. The trend is particularly evident in Sadr City, a sprawling district in northeastern Baghdad that houses 2.5 million people and has long been dominated by the Mahdi Army militia of anti-U.S. cleric Muqtada al-Sadr. Fierce fighting broke out in the area after the U.S.-backed government launched a crackdown in late March, but the clashes ebbed after al-Sadr called for a cease-fire. Usually acting on tips, Iraqi soldiers have rounded up rockets, grenades and other explosive devices from mosques, hospitals and schoolhouses in the aftermath. Many of those weapons were laid out for reporters at the former Iraqi air base in southeastern Baghdad on Wednesday as the U.S. and Iraqi military showed off their recent gains but warned there was more work to be done. Iraqi soldiers, with U.S. troops staying on the outskirts of the district, have discovered 51 caches containing 7,820 weapons and other munitions in Sadr City between the start of the operation and June 16, according to figures provided by the U.S. military. "I don't think it's the bulk of it, but I think it put a big dent in their destructive power," U.S. Maj. Mark Cheadle said, gesturing to the rows of rusty grenade launchers and shiny copper plates used to make powerful roadside bombs known as explosively formed penetrators, or EFPs, which allegedly come from Iran. Also lined up were an ambulance, buses and several other vehicles that the Iraqi military said had been used to transport weapons and stage kidnappings and other violence before they were confiscated. But it is the bizarre locations of some of the discoveries that are attracting the most attention. One recent tip led U.S. soldiers to a bakery in a Shiite militia stronghold in eastern Baghdad. The troops had to fight their way into the storefront, where they found what the military called an "EFP-making factory." In a feed warehouse in another Shiite area of Baghdad, Iraqi soldiers found 90 122 mm rockets, EFP components, mortar shells and an American unmanned drone that apparently had been downed by mechanical failure. And in a mainly Sunni area about 20 miles southwest of the capital, U.S. and Iraqi soldiers pulled six 120 mm mortar rounds from the murky waters of a fish farm.

Amen nikki -

I woulldn't be suprised to see something like this from the AP & other maligned news propaganda outlets, er, I mean agencies:

However, on a sad note many Democrats are outraged that they are not wmd's found in Iraq, and demand that we return the weapons back to the farmers and families we stole them from in this staged event - so they can protect themselves from the invading infidels.

Meanwhile, back in the US the Democrats push hard to abolish the 2nd amendment with the help of the courts, as the reckless and dangerous gun toting Republicans, even though many are farmers as well, continue to give the US a bad name around the world, with their agressive and threatening posturing with their dangerous firearms.

Stay tuned for more news updates as they emerge.

Success breeds more success. On the homefront, you'll note that the Congress passed the war budget without any battle over timetables for withdrawal this time. And, FISA has been renewed with "bi-partisan" action.

Do you think continued in the basement low approval ratings for the Dem controlled Congress have anything to do with that? HA!

Didn't the report say U.S. forces found as many weapons caches so far this year as all of last year. Now that Iraqi's feel safer, they are coming forward. Great post.

Despite all this success, Obama keeps preaching that we should get out of Iraq. I can't imagine this will eventually catch up with him in the polls.

Unfortunately I don't think it will catch up with Obama. His legions of kool aid drinkers don't ever actually listen to WHAT he says anyway, just how he says it. There are not exactly a lot of military historians filling out the ranks of his legions of leftists..

Quit saying it's a Dem controlled Congress-that's bull and you know it. The rethugs have turncoat LIEbermann, and the tiebreaker, DICK. Sixty is the magic number in the Senate, not 51. Until then the rethugs can filibuster to obstruct any legislative action. BTW, have you looked at Bush's numbers lately?

Gun control laws, like those that attempt to close gun show loopholes, can hardly be called abolishing the 2nd amendment, except in rethug land. Keep playing to your 28% base.

Not only does Senator Obama want us out of Iraq, 70% in the US wants us out (http://www.pollingreport.com/iraq.htm)

Thank you for the Kool Aid comments. Everything you post eventually comes around to something you THINK you can use against Senator Obama. Without fail. In direct violation against DoD Directives.

I thought lawyers were supposed to be impartial, interested in upholding the law and the constitution. Didn't you take an oath to do so? Have you no shame? If you knew a neocon was violating the constitution, would you prosecute them? The US Supreme Court has ruled against Bush and still you shill for them? Where are your ethics? Have you even been admitted to the bar?

You, sir , are no Lt. Cmdr. Charles Swift, and should be ashamed of yourself. I hope your professors are proud. But I guess you always wanted to be a lobbyist anyway.

It’s a Democrat controlled congress. It’s a Democrat controlled congress. It’s a Democrat controlled congress.

And since you want to be so condescending – back at ya!

How ignorant are you about our government. Both Houses are led by Dimwits. ie The Dimwits have controlled congress since the 06 elections. Nancy Pelosi (D) (Speaker of the House and 3rd in line to the Presidency) & Harry Reid (D)= Congress. The Dimwits control the agenda, legislation, chair the committees, the investigations, ect., ect...

Seek a real poll about the 2nd amendment – only in lib land are they for gun laws against good citizens. Only in lib land, and of course Dimwit land, do they want to pull out of Iraq in defeat. Last poll I saw said 70% were in favor of WINNING in Iraq, then coming home.

But, when you ask a skewed poll - “do you want us out of Iraq”? – duh most people are going to say yes. If you ask “do you want us to win in Iraq and then come home”? - That yields a different result.

The Kool Aid drinkers are the mindless nitwits who will follow Obama right over the cliff – and you, with the other herd mentality will plunge willingly. That snake oil lying salesman has repeatedly gone back on his word again and again already, and he hasn’t even been elected, yet.

Ie. I’m will make sure there is a United Israel, no wait what ever the Palestinians want. I’m for public financing, no wait, I’m not. I stand by rev Wright, no I toss him under the bus, I stand by my church, Trinity, no wait, I’m leaving it. I stand by Mr. Johnson, no wait, I don’t. We need to get out of Iraq, well wait a minute – I will listen to my commanders, no wait I will get out of Iraq – and on and on – and we still have a few months to go!!!

Dems control congress. Dems control congress.

Change you can believe in:

Obama said Iran is not a threat, then changed it to I've always said Iran is a great threat. Iran's Revolutionary Guard is a not a terrorist organization, Oh yes it is. I will meet rogue leaders (like Iran's leader) without preconditions, I change my mind and contexting. I don't support NAFTA - Oh yes I do. I oppose decriminalizing marijuana, er, “I think we need to rethink and decriminalize our marijuana laws,”

Now let's all have a fist bump and somebody pass that joint - HOPE there's some left, and CHANGE that music to some rap, whitey.

There is no way to "win" in Iraq.

Nice "rap" and "whitey" comments. I knew the KKK would get around to finding this blog eventually.

Fishman-I strongly suggest you formally chastise these types of racist comments, you know, in case the IG is looking.

Anon - I'd watch myself, if I were you. You are skating slanderous comments lableing me as you posted. I have no affiliation with, nor desire to engage any such groups.

On top of that your blindness and ignorance is staggering! Not to mention that I rather often post is a satirical humor, or at least try. But, to enlighten you - Obama has STATED he used drugs, smoked weed, ectt.. - he like rap music - and he associates with (ie associates with) people like rev Wright, and rev Pflager, at least who quite liberally use whitey in their speak, so to speak.

My gosh, you really do have a problem with logic.

We have won in Iraq, by the way. That country has truly had an awakening, and has turned against Al Qeada because of our commitment, and surge - they chose us.

But, you weak liberals and leftists would have pulled out, and let those people get slaughtered, and dominated by such murderous thugs, it is unconscionable. Yet, many Dems even now are still trying to pull out in defeat just to hurt Pres. Bush and the Republicans. Eventually the Dems aka. Dimwits - will try to claim they played a part in, if not responsible for bringing our troops home. When they lengthened it by their division and giving confidence to the enemy. Not to mention their obstructions and political shenanegans. Not to mention jack murtha, dick durbin, ted kennedy, ect... with thier attacks on our soldiers, fueling anger against us. And, the band leader harry reid delcaring "..the war is lost, lets face it."

I don't know why I bothered to post that - most people that come here ernestly already knows this, and the nitwits who don't get it, apparently won't ever. Something about that logic deficit disorder - it must be cancerous like to the mind.
